Welcome
to CODEPINK -Women for Peace of Greater Dallas
Without
a direct action expression of it, nonviolence, to my mind, is
meaningless." M. K. Gandhi
|
CODEPINK
is a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice
movement working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars,
and redirect our resources into healthcare, education
and other life-affirming activities. CODEPINK
rejects the Bush administration's fear-based politics
that justify violence, and instead calls for policies
based on compassion, kindness and a commitment to
international law. With an emphasis on joy and humor,
CODEPINK
women and men seek to activate, amplify and inspire a
community of peacemakers through creative campaigns and
a commitment to non-violence. |

We'd like for you to join us if you live in Dallas,

DC Activist House DC |
| |
CODEPINK
is renting a beautiful house in DC
for a year so we can support our
ongoing peace presence in the halls
of Congress. We are committed to
ending the Iraq war and bringing our
troops home by the end of the year,
and having a home base in DC will
help us do just that.
Here
are all the details you need to make
plans to come to DC:
|
 |
 |
|
In
this photo are the women
who stayed at the house
during the first
week--they're pointing
to the space in the
middle and asking...
will you join us?
|
Why
have a house?
We are taking action every day in
Congress and around DC! We're making
headline news and we're focused on
promptly bringing the US occupation
of Iraq to an end. To find out the
latest info about our DC actions,
visit the blog at
http://codepinkdc.blogspot.com.
Who
stays at the CODEPINK House?
Women activists who can commit to
being in DC for a week or longer and
working for peace daily are welcome
to stay at the house. There is no
cost to stay at the house -thanks to
a generous donation to
CODEPINK,
we are able to offer this housing
for free to dedicated activists who
can give their time, energy, and
creativity to our DC efforts.
If you are interested in staying in
the house, please fill out an
on-line housing application. |
 |
When
should you come to DC?
We invite you to come to DC for a
few days, a week, or longer whenever
you can. Since we're taking
daily action in Congress, every day
is a great day to be in DC. |
 |
What's
the house like?
The
CODEPINK
house is a beautiful 3 story
brownstone row house with five
bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms, a great
kitchen, a living room, an office,
and we've converted the basement
into a large "Peace Room" (our
answer to the War Room) where we are
making banners, props, and holding
group meetings.
 |
|
Ret.
Col. Ann Wright in a bedroom
on the third floor, where
she edited the text for her
forthcoming book. |
Thanks to the round the clock
furnishing efforts of
CODEPINK
DC activist Joan and the wonders of
craigslist.org and freecycle, our
house has couches, a stocked
kitchen, twin beds and futons,
bookshelves, a cable tv (so we can
watch ourselves on CSPAN!) and we're
almost online with wireless
internet. We are still in need of
some items, so if you're coming to
stay at the house or have friends in
DC, please
check out our
house wish list. If you
are driving when you come, please
call to see what we still need as
new things are being donated daily.
The house has iron steps to the
door, a foyer, a small living room
(our office media center), a dining
room

Room in the DC
house--a place for

blogging, and group

and a big linen-dishes closet,
and a kitchen with refrigerator, gas
stove, dishwasher, and ample cabinet
space.
There is one step from the
kitchen to the back yard with a
grass rectangle, a patio with
outdoor table and chairs, and a
cement pull-in parking space.
Desiree brought herb seeds, so one
day we may even have a peace garden
out back! The bedrooms vary in size
and can house 2-4 activists in each;
they have big windows that look out
on the tree-lined street. Weekender
activist guests can stay on the
futons in the Peace Room (see photo
of the room at right) if the house
gets full. |
 |
Where
is the house?
The house is located in the Northeast section of Washington, DC, a
15-30 minute walk from Congress
(depending on which building you're
headed to), and is about 5 blocks
from Union Station (train station
and subway stop). We often have
access to one or more vehicles to
help us get to and from Congress and
other action locations with banners
and props.
If you fly into Reagan National
Airport (DCA), you can take a cab to
the house for about $15 or take the
metro to Union Station. From Dulles
Airport (IAD), you can take the
train in as well. From Baltimore
Airport (BWI), you can take a bus to
the metro.

Are
there scholarships available?
CODEPINK
is a volunteer-based movement that
relies on the organizing ability of
people to fundraise locally. This is
a great opportunity to reach out to
your community for assistance to
help make your trip possible.
Because of a generous donation to
CODEPINK,
there is now some scholarship
assistance for experienced
CODEPINK
organizers who can be in DC for at
least a week. We will offer a
perdiem stipend that can go towards
defraying your travel costs. Please
note your funding needs in your
housing application.
It's important when coming to DC
that you can be flexible and open to
changes in the schedule, and
accommodating as we set up the house
and build our actions.We need
your help to stop Congress from
buying Bush's war! Join us and help
build the pink house, bring the
mandate for peace to the peoples'
House. Plant a seed in our garden, a
seed of change in our government,
and a seed of hope in your heart!
In the words of
CODEPINK
DC activist Joan, "You
MIGHT want to get your butts into
town. By the way, we were in tank
tops today. Blue skies. Crocuses
popping, daffodils blooming. People
out walking. You MIGHT want to head
this way. Congress could use some of
you slick talkers and peaceful
walkers."
CODEPINK
DC Resident House Coordinator
Desiree writes, "We've
scrubbed the floors, aired out all
the rooms, plumped up pillows, hung
curtains, stocked the pantry,
organized banners and ironed the
Pink Police uniforms. Now we just
need you!!!"
Hope to see you in DC soon! |
